The Senate passed just one bill, but it alone was an incredible 500 pages. It is all too much for one organization to keep track of or understand. Since most bills have provisions that amend previous laws, it is virtually impossible for a member of Congress to keep up with and understand so many pages of legislation. Yet Congress passes these bills anyway, making government bigger and bigger every day. The only way to prevent Big Government from growing is to change the way Congress does things. Through the Read the Bills Act, members of Congress will be required to have read and understood the laws they pass. This will encourage bills to be simplified and shorter. It will also cut down on the volume of legislation because Congress will only have time to consider urgent bills that have widespread support.
